Architect Frank Gehry was commissioned by Knoll in 1989 to create a line of furniture in his distinctive idiom. After 3 years of work, the resulting chairs, including the Power Play Chair, were displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Power Play designs were inspired by apple crates and the names by hockey terms, and the result is as comfortable and exhilarating as such a meeting of influences could hope. Constructed of laminated maple, and fashioned mostly with ribbon-like waving strips of wood, the chairs break with convention but embrace beauty and innovation. Each piece comes stamped with the KnollStudio logo, Frank Gehry’s signature and the date of production.
