Furniture drawings at the CIDI (Centro de Investigaciones de Diseño Industrial –Industrial Design Research Center) at the UNAM (Universidad Autónoma de México) clearly present the evidence of Clara Porset´s involvement and cooperation with Michael van Beuren on multiple projects. Clara designed complete furniture lines for Van Beuren y Cía, though, very little has been written about this particular collaborative work.

One project they worked on together is well-known and has been described in documents and books: when Porset manufactured a series of chair samples through Michael van Beuren´s Company DOMUS for export to the US back in 1951.

The Clara Porset – Michael van Beuren duo also worked together on some interior design projects. Several architect homes in Mexico like Mario Pani´s and Max Cetto had an harmonic combination of  Clara Porset furniture pieces placed together with pieces from the Michael van Beuren´s DOMUS collection.

Unfortunately, with time and misleading web reproduction of photos and descriptions without further research, some Michael van Beuren´s designs have been wrongly attributed to Clara Porset, like our sample shown below:

This lounge set with a handwoven rush seat and back, and many other versions that I have seen lately have been attributed to Clara Porset based on several published pictures on architect Mario Pani´s home in Acapulco and other projects like the Multifamiliar Miguel Alemán she worked on with him.

A special “Porset-Van Beuren” variant of these lounge chairs with armrests would be speculative. I think it would be more than fair to emphasize that the rightful owner of this lounge chair design is Michael van Beuren for Muebles DOMUS back in 1944 -1947.
